Alamogordo Public Schools is getting a new middle school

Dekker has been selected to partner with Alamogordo Public Schools and the Public Schools Facilities Authority (PSFA) on the design of the new Chaparral Middle School, an opportunity we are honored to undertake in support of the District’s educational vision and community values. The approximate 87,000 square foot campus will serve students in grades 6–8 and will be designed to promote academic excellence, student engagement, and future-ready learning.

The new school will feature dedicated grade-level learning communities, administrative offices, dining services, arts and STEM spaces, a media and technology center, and both indoor and outdoor areas for physical activity. Learning environments will be designed to support a wide range of instructional models, including project-based, inquiry-driven, and student-centered education, empowering students through flexibility, collaboration, and real-world application.

The project will be constructed on the current middle school site and will be a phased process to ensure continuity of operations and safety throughout. Once the new campus is complete, the existing school facilities will be decommissioned and demolished. The site will then be fully redeveloped with improved circulation, enhanced parent and school bus access, new outdoor learning areas, and secure campus entry points creating a modern and unified school environment that reflects the District’s long-term goals for student success.

The vision for the new school

Developed by the District’s design committee, five visionary goals guide the planning of the new Chaparral Middle School:

  1. Real-World Skills & Collaboration – Promote authentic learning through meaningful projects and strong educator support
  2. Creative, Problem-Based Learning – Provide flexible spaces that support teamwork, exploration, and long-term inquiry.
  3. Technology-Infused Learning – Seamlessly integrate digital tools for multiple devices and cloud-based learning.
  4. Hands-On, Collaborative Environments – Include STEM/Flex Labs, science labs, CTE areas, and outdoor classrooms that encourage interactive learning.
  5. Social Skills & Critical Thinking – Design environments that build respect, self-management, cultural awareness, and collaborative decision-making.

The design of Chaparral Middle School will reflect community priorities identified through collaborative planning: connections to parks and recreation, access to shared educational and healthcare resources, and proximity to trails, living labs, and outdoor classrooms. Local materials and regional character will be emphasized throughout, with climate-responsive outdoor areas that promote environmental awareness, habitat restoration, and social connection.

With this new campus, Alamogordo Public Schools and PSFA is investing in an adaptable, sustainable, and inspiring educational environment, one that prepares students for the future while honoring the unique identity of the Chaparral community.
