Office + Workplace

A building that has you covered

BlueCross BlueShield Office Building

BlueCross BlueShield's regional headquarters building is prepared for the company's long-term needs. With state-of-the-art workspace and support and sustainable design strategies, the building provides a strong corporate identity and serves as an important role model for new commercial offices.

Dekker, in collaboration with zpd+a architects of Chicago, worked hand-in-hand with BlueCross BlueShield's corporate real estate leadership to design the four-story building. A single, controlled entrance is welcoming and also strengthens security of staff and information. From the main lobby, two narrow office wings extend from either side. The design includes flexibility of office layouts and power and distribution systems, meeting spaces for training and video conferencing, a 125-seat food court, and a new fitness center.

Non-toxic and renewable materials and clean air strategies save energy and promote a healthy work environment. Sustainable principles also include large expanses of windows with carefully controlled glazing to provide natural daylighting, prevent unwanted glare, and offer views of neighboring mountains.

To resist earthquake and wind loads, the primary structure of the building consists of steel framing with exposed and non-exposed lateral bracing in each principal direction. Even though the building has a complex geometric shape, the consistent structural grid eliminated costly structural discontinuities.
