The high school of the century

Centennial High School

Designed by Dekker in association with ASA Architects, the potentially overwhelming 160-acre high school was transformed into a welcoming, state-of-the-art environment. The campus plan nestles buildings and outdoor spaces within the natural topography and maximizes views of the nearby Organ Mountains. The campus layout of separate buildings organized around a series of outdoor plazas and courtyards takes advantage of the Las Cruces climate to provide a rich learning experience, minimize indoor circulation, and provide gathering areas protected from sun and wind.

In an effort to reduce dropout rates, classrooms are organized into small learning communities that serve as the home base of students and instructors. A separate ninth grade academy eases the transition to high school, while academies for upper classmen focus on preparing students for college.

Outdoor recreation areas include a lighted track and football stadium, one soccer field, two practice fields, paved areas for marching band practice, softball and baseball fields, tennis courts, and basketball courts. Sports facilities are oriented and graded precisely for optimal competition. Supporting buildings include a concession/restroom structure, maintenance building, and storage facilities. Athletic and performing arts spaces are located together to allow for large community events and competitions.

Extensive daylighting with translucent panels, solar hot water systems, efficient lighting systems and sensors, and landscape water harvesting promote sustainability throughout the campus. Additionally, an energy-efficient ice storage mechanical system allows the District to save money through off-peak energy usage.
