Designing for rehabilitation and wellness in Arizona
ClearSky Rehabilitation Hospital Avondale, AZ
The ClearSky Rehabilitation Hospital of Avondale is a 30 bed, 40,000sf private facility that brings much needed rehabilitation care to Avondale, Arizona. The new health center will provide rehabilitation services to those recovering from stroke, heart attack, brain injury, spinal cord injury, orthopedic conditions, cancer, and pulmonary conditions.
The rehabilitation design in Arizona creates an environment that empowers recovery and restoration that will transition patients from acute care facilities back to home living.
An outdoor therapy courtyard provides spaces for patients to practice their mobility outdoors, including navigating ramps and stairs. Included is a small putting green to aid not only in mental wellness in addition to physical wellness.
Privacy glass etched with branded graphics preserve daylight access while providing privacy in the physical therapy rooms. Sound attenuation panels were incorporated as a design element to allow for tall ceilings and an open space in the dining hall, while still providing sound attenuation.
ClearSky Avondale is the first ClearSky rehabilitation design in Arizona, and has since turned into an ongoing collaboration between ClearSky and Dekker. Since Avondale, Dekker has gone on to design over a dozen ClearSky Rehabilitation centers around the country, iterating on and adjusting the design for each one to meet the needs of the local community.
