FLC Sitter Family Hall

The new Sitter Family Hall for Physics, Engineering and Geosciences is a major addition to an existing campus facility. The 60,000sf, 4-story building offers the advantages of modern, energy efficient building technologies and up-to-date instructional configurations, including active-learning classrooms. User groups participated directly in the programming and design process and overwhelmingly welcomed a more interactive, dynamic, and sustainable environment for learning.

The facility primarily contains class space – both teaching labs and group instructional space – interspersed with collaborative student and faculty spaces. The building includes a combination of spaces gathered together for each of the three departments with shared spaces in between – encouraging interaction between students and faculty of all programs. The faculty office area is similarly configured with departments grouped together and conference and meeting spaces shared by all.

The building is carefully sited at the end of a main campus pedestrian corridor and creates a courtyard in front of the entry. This usable outdoor space includes seating areas, an interactive sundial and large rocks from the surrounding hills as a connection to the campus context and for hands-on learning activities for the geosciences students.
