Hotel Chaco Landscape

Hotel Chaco is a 118-room boutique hotel located in the historic Sawmill District, adjacent to Albuquerque's Historic Old Town. The hotel and property are designed to offer visitors an authentic New Mexico experience, inspired by the beauty, history and culture of Chaco Canyon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in northern New Mexico. Dekker provided planning and landscape architecture services to Heritage Hotels & Resorts and their architect, Gensler.

The site design is intended to create a memorable and unique atmosphere from the moment visitors enter the property. Circular patterns and forms are used at the entrance and in the main courtyard. The circles are bridges between past and present – reflecting the strong circular forms found at Chaco Canyon and the random patterns of rain drops and human tears on desert soil.

Circular water features at the entry and courtyard reinforce the theme. They also highlight water as a resource central to regional culture, and create a soothing and inviting experience for visitors. Large, vertical basalt monoliths stand inside each fountain - expressing a powerful connection between earth and water.

The courtyard is the heart of the property. Sitting areas are sprinkled like raindrops across a mound of soft native grasses that flow between native cottonwood trees. A tall curved corten wall encloses the space and amplifies the sound of water falling in the circular pool.
