Teaming up to teach
Los Alamos Middle School
Los Alamos Middle School's identity and teaching spaces were transformed through an addition, renovations, and comprehensive site improvements, all completed while the campus remained occupied. Renovations transformed underutilized space into special education classrooms and improved administrative areas. The entire site was reconfigured to separate bus, visitor, and staff traffic. It also creates a fire loop and a landscaped gathering courtyard.
The classroom addition forms a protected courtyard and creates a secure entry flanked by a prominent media center. It is organized in clusters to support team teaching; each cluster consists of three general classrooms, student lockers, a science classroom, science prep room, and commons. The commons can be used for informal instruction, guest speakers, combined class events, and educational activities that require flexible space and movable furniture.
The exterior design provides an updated campus identity in keeping with the District's modern, high-tech focus. Materials include a combination of metal panel, stucco, and large windows to take in panoramic views.
