ENMU-R Educational Center
The Educational Center is a one-stop shop for students at Eastern New Mexico University's Roswell campus. Because student services were previously difficult to navigate, students would often become frustrated and leave before speaking to staff. The new facility streamlines student services by combining spaces for enrollment, admissions, financial aid, advising, and testing.
The design of the Educational Center is informed by the student perspective. Interior barriers between departments are broken down to create a single, comprehensive space. The one-stop shop solution expedites and enhances student services. To fully incorporate the new program, the university also cross-trained staff that interfaces with students. Now staff is trained in each departments' function, so help is immediate and the process is more open and simple for students.
The building achieves Exemplary Performance in three sustainable categories: use of materials with recycled content, quantity control of storm water runoff, and views for all occupants of the building. It also introduces low-water use landscaping into a campus that has traditionally contained excessive turf cover. Due to the water-scarce nature of the region, water conservation has positive consequences far beyond the building and campus, a fact recognized with a LEED regional priority credit for water reduction.
