NMJC Pannell Library

The renovation of this existing campus library focused on increasing space efficiency and upgrading the building and its systems to respond to concerns about safety, accessibility, and sustainability. Pannell Library was originally constructed in the 1960s as a single-story building, and a second floor was added in the 1980s to house overflow collections. The library renovation required that collections be consolidated to the first level to allow the second floor to be dedicated to classrooms.

Library stacks were removed from the second floor to accommodate new classrooms, computer labs, distance-learning classrooms, offices, and support spaces. By incorporating a compact storage system designed for browsing, the entire collection now easily fits on the first floor, allowing the second floor to function as a series of flexible classrooms and administrative space.

A small building addition provides a new entry vestibule, stair, and elevator to resolve code issues and enhance the library's image as the center of campus. From the exterior, this addition updates the look of the building with an elegant combination of curtain wall, metal panels, and a metal canopy, all of which relate to the material palette of other recent campus buildings. The replacement of glazing also improves maintenance and promotes energy conservation.

The latest technology is used in the library renovation. Systems, materials, and finishes are easily maintained. All lighting and plumbing systems are updated to conserve energy and water. Furthermore, the College performed a hazardous materials abatement to ensure a safe and sustainable interior environment.
